Job Description
Are you an experienced and dedicated Sailor with a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of navigation, and a commitment to maritime safety? Marine & Industrial Ltd is seeking a skilled and proactive Sailor to join our dynamic team, based out of our operations in Yate, Bristol. As a Sailor – Navigation & Crew Assistance, you will play a crucial role in the safe and efficient operation of various vessels used for demonstrations, testing, transport, and support. Your responsibilities will extend beyond traditional seamanship, encompassing essential aspects of vessel maintenance, logistical support for equipment, and ensuring the highest standards of safety for all crew and passengers onboard. While your primary base will be in Yate, Bristol, this role will involve travel and deployment to various marine environments, including coastal waters, inland waterways, and dockside operations, depending on project requirements.
You will work closely with our technical and engineering teams, assisting in the preparation and deployment of marine equipment, ensuring all operations adhere strictly to maritime regulations and company safety protocols. Your navigational prowess will be vital in planning and executing safe passages, while your leadership and communication skills will ensure effective crew coordination and assistance. Key Responsibilities
- Execute safe and efficient navigational watchkeeping duties as required.
- Perform general vessel handling, mooring, and anchoring procedures with precision.
- Conduct routine safety equipment checks and ensure all safety protocols are meticulously followed.
- Undertake general vessel maintenance tasks, including cleaning, painting, and minor repairs.
- Assist with the loading, unloading, and securing of marine equipment and cargo.
- Provide comprehensive crew assistance and support, contributing to a positive onboard environment.
- Adhere strictly to all national and international maritime regulations and company policies.
- Actively participate in all safety drills, training, and emergency response procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of vessel operations, maintenance, and safety checks.
- Operate and maintain deck machinery and other ancillary equipment.
- Assist clients and demonstrate marine equipment during trials or showcases when necessary.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in basic navigation, chart work, and electronic navigation systems.
- Demonstrable experience in general seamanship, including knot tying and rope work.
- Ability to follow complex instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Good physical fitness and stamina, capable of performing demanding duties in various weather conditions.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for routine vessel checks and maintenance.
- Current STCW Basic Safety Training certificates (or equivalent accepted certifications).
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
- Strong understanding of maritime safety procedures and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- RYA Yachtmaster Offshore/Coastal or MCA Master (Code Vessels) <200GT certification.
- Experience with specific types of commercial workboats, patrol vessels, or research craft.
- Advanced First Aid or Medical Care Person Onboard (MCPO) training.
- Basic engineering knowledge related to marine propulsion systems.
- Experience in client-facing roles, such as conducting equipment demonstrations or training.
- GMDSS Restricted Operator’s Certificate (ROC) or General Operator’s Certificate (GOC).
