Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and dedicated Water Treatment Operator to join our essential team at the utility plant in Matadi, Kongo-Central Province. This crucial on-site role involves the meticulous operation and vigilant monitoring of processes and equipment within our state-of-the-art water treatment facility, ensuring the continuous supply of safe, clean, and potable water to the entire Matadi community. As a Water Treatment Operator, you will be at the heart of our mission to provide essential public services. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor all water treatment plant equipment, including pumps, valves, filters, and chemical feed systems.
  • Perform routine and advanced laboratory tests on raw and treated water samples to ensure continuous compliance with stringent water quality standards (e.g., pH, turbidity, chlorine residual, microbial indicators).
  • Accurately adjust chemical dosages (e.g., coagulants, disinfectants, pH adjusters) based on real-time water quality analysis and dynamic operational needs.
  • Conduct thorough regular inspections of the plant, identifying and promptly reporting any equipment malfunctions, leaks, process deviations, or potential safety hazards.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed operational logs, records, and reports, comprehensively documenting treatment processes, chemical usage, maintenance activities, and all test results.
  • Troubleshoot and swiftly resolve minor operational issues and provide skilled assistance to maintenance personnel for more complex equipment repairs as needed.
  • Strictly implement and adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and established procedures within the utility setting.
  • Actively participate in the cleaning, preventative maintenance, and precise calibration of instruments and various plant machinery.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to alarms and emergencies, initiating immediate corrective actions to prevent service interruptions or compromises to water quality.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors to optimize plant performance, enhance efficiency, and achieve operational goals.

Required Skills

  • Proven hands-on experience (minimum 2 years) as a Water Treatment Operator or in a similar operational role within a utility plant.
  • Strong foundational understanding of core water treatment processes (e.g., coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of water chemistry principles and practical laboratory testing procedures relevant to water quality analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, monitor, and manage complex control systems and specialized water treatment machinery.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific safety protocols, environmental regulations, and compliance standards in a utility setting.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical troubleshooting abilities to address operational challenges efficiently.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach to maintaining accurate and complete operational records.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude for performing minor repairs, routine maintenance, and equipment adjustments.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as an integral part of a team in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Physical stamina and capability to perform duties that may include lifting, climbing, working in confined spaces, and exposure to various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant certification in Water Treatment Operations from a recognized institution.
  • Technical Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Direct experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for comprehensive plant monitoring and control.
  • In-depth knowledge of local water quality regulations and specific reporting requirements within the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Proficiency in French; knowledge of local languages such as Lingala or Swahili is a significant advantage for effective local interaction.
