Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute daily waste collection routes as assigned, ensuring timely and thorough collection of various types of waste from designated points.
  • Operate and maintain waste collection equipment (e.g., handcarts, shovels, brooms) safely and effectively, reporting any malfunctions or damages promptly.
  • Sort and separate waste materials at collection points or designated transfer stations according to established waste management protocols (e.g., organic, recyclable, general waste).
  • Transport collected waste to appropriate disposal or recycling facilities in compliance with local regulations and organizational standards.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety guidelines, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
  • Contribute to the general cleanliness and upkeep of waste storage areas, collection vehicles, and transfer stations.
  • Engage respectfully with community members during collection activities, answering basic inquiries and promoting awareness about proper waste disposal practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of collected waste volumes and types as required by supervisors.

Required Skills

  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform strenuous tasks, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling waste materials in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong understanding and adherence to safety protocols and procedures related to waste handling and equipment operation.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating reliability and responsibility.
  • Basic literacy (ability to read and write simple reports or complete forms).
  • Excellent time management skills and punctuality.
  • A positive attitude and a strong commitment to environmental hygiene and public health.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (1-2 years) in waste collection, sanitation, or a similar physically demanding role.
  • Knowledge of local waste management regulations and best practices.
  • Familiarity with the Beni locality and its communities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Swahili or Kinande.
