Job Description
Are you passionate about animal welfare and community development? World Vision DRC is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our team in Mwene-Ditu, Lomami Province. This vital role will support our community-based animal health initiatives, which are integral to enhancing the livelihoods and food security of vulnerable families. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will work closely with our program staff and local communities, providing essential support in the care, treatment, and management of various types of livestock, including goats, sheep, poultry, and sometimes cattle, which are critical assets for families in the region. Your responsibilities will extend beyond direct animal care to include community engagement, education on basic animal husbandry practices, and assisting with the implementation of animal health campaigns. Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians and animal health technicians in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of livestock in community settings.
- Provide basic animal care, including feeding, watering, grooming, and monitoring the health of animals involved in World Vision programs.
- Support the administration of medications, vaccinations, and other treatments as directed by supervising veterinary staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of animal holding areas, equipment, and medical supplies.
- Educate community members on basic animal husbandry, hygiene practices, and disease prevention.
- Assist with data collection, record-keeping, and reporting on animal health activities and outcomes.
- Participate in outreach programs and community health campaigns related to animal welfare.
- Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely during procedures.
- Manage and organize inventory of veterinary supplies and equipment.
- Collaborate effectively with World Vision staff, local leaders, and community volunteers.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in animal handling and basic care.
- Basic knowledge of common livestock diseases and preventative measures.
- Ability to work effectively in rural and challenging field environments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact respectfully with diverse community members.
- Fluency in French and Swahili (local languages are a strong asset).
- Physical stamina and ability to perform duties requiring lifting and extended periods of standing/walking.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated commitment to humanitarian principles and World Vision's mission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification or diploma in Veterinary Assisting, Animal Science, or related field.
- Previous experience working with NGOs or in community development programs.
- Familiarity with record-keeping software or mobile data collection tools.
- Experience in training or facilitating workshops for community groups.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
