Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating room with all necessary sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment prior to surgical procedures.
- Maintain and monitor the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic techniques.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, passing instruments and supplies efficiently and accurately.
- Assist with patient positioning, draping, and providing retraction or suction as directed by the surgeon.
- Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety.
- Care for and handle surgical specimens according to hospital policy.
- Assist with the cleaning and restocking of the operating room after procedures, ensuring readiness for subsequent cases.
- Participate in the surgical 'time out' process to verify patient, procedure, and site.
- Provide support and communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
Required Skills
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the NBSTSA or NCCT.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Proven ability to maintain sterile technique and aseptic practices.
- Excellent knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of experience as a Surgical Technologist in an acute care setting.
- Experience across multiple surgical specialties (e.g., General, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac).
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
