Job Description
The University of the Pacific is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Studio Equipment Technician – Maintenance to join our dynamic technical operations team in Stockton, California. In this pivotal full-time role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the continuous, reliable, and optimal operation of all studio and media production equipment across various academic and administrative departments, with a particular focus on the Conservatory of Music, Communication programs, and other units utilizing advanced audio, video, and lighting technologies. This position is ideal for an individual with a profound understanding of broadcast, recording studio, live performance, and multimedia production environments who thrives on proactive maintenance, rapid troubleshooting, and comprehensive technical support.
Your responsibilities will span from executing routine inspections and developing preventative maintenance schedules to performing complex repairs, system calibrations, and the precise setup of specialized equipment for educational projects, public performances, and significant university events. You will be a critical resource, providing technical assistance and guidance to faculty, staff, and students, ensuring they have access to fully functional and cutting-edge equipment. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventative maintenance, calibration, and cleaning of all studio audio, video, lighting, and control room equipment.
- Diagnose and repair technical faults and malfunctions in a wide range of studio equipment, including cameras, microphones, mixers, amplifiers, projectors, recording devices, and control surfaces.
- Install, configure, and upgrade new and existing studio equipment and systems, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.
- Provide technical support and training to faculty, staff, and students on the proper operation and care of studio equipment.
- Maintain detailed records of equipment inventory, maintenance schedules, repairs, and service history.
- Manage and organize equipment storage areas, ensuring proper labeling, accessibility, and security.
- Assist with the setup, operation, and teardown of equipment for live events, performances, and remote productions as needed.
- Research and recommend new equipment purchases, software updates, and technology solutions to enhance studio capabilities.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety standards and university policies regarding equipment operation and maintenance.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in studio equipment maintenance or a related technical support role.
- Proven expertise in troubleshooting and repairing professional audio, video, and lighting equipment.
- Strong understanding of signal flow (analog and digital) in studio and live sound environments.
- Familiarity with various operating systems (Windows, macOS) and professional production software.
- Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, diagrams, and service manuals.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to technical challenges.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in equipment management.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with technical and non-technical users.
- Physical ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs and work in various studio environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Broadcast Technology, Audio Engineering, or a related field.
- Certifications from industry-standard equipment manufacturers (e.g., Avid, Blackmagic Design, Yamaha, Shure).
- Experience with network-based audio/video technologies (e.g., Dante, NDI).
- Experience in an educational institution or similar multi-user environment.
- Knowledge of IT networking principles as they apply to media production systems.
