Cardiff Metropolitan University is seeking a proactive and empathetic Student Advisor with a focus on School Counseling principles to join our Student Services team. Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one confidential advice and guidance to students on a wide range of academic, personal, and welfare issues.
- Offer immediate support and crisis intervention for students experiencing distress or urgent personal matters.
- Develop and deliver workshops and group sessions on topics such as stress management, academic planning, career exploration, and well-being.
- Act as a referral point for specialized services, including mental health support, disability services, financial aid, and academic tutoring.
- Collaborate with academic staff, faculty, and other university departments to ensure integrated student support.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress, adhering to data protection policies.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of student support policies and procedures.
- Participate in outreach activities and events to promote student services and engage with the student body.
- Advocate for student needs and provide feedback to improve university services and resources.
- Stay updated on best practices in student counseling and higher education support services.
Required Skills
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, Social Work, or a related field.
- Proven experience (at least 2 years) in a counseling, advisory, or pastoral care role, preferably within an educational setting.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in crisis situations.
- Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach to student support.
- Proficiency in using IT systems for record-keeping and communication.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Counseling, Guidance, or a related field.
- Professional accreditation or membership with a relevant counseling or psychological body (e.g., BACP, BPS).
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including international students and those with specific learning needs.
- Knowledge of higher education policies, student welfare regulations, and safeguarding practices.
- Experience in developing and delivering workshops or group interventions.
