Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Structural Engineer with a strong focus on design and safety to join our esteemed team in Rose Hall, Montego Bay. This pivotal role involves contributing to a diverse portfolio of challenging and rewarding projects across Jamaica. The successful candidate will be responsible for the comprehensive structural design of various building types and infrastructure projects, ensuring all designs comply with relevant local and international building codes, standards, and safety regulations. You will engage in the full project lifecycle, from initial conceptualization and feasibility studies to detailed design, construction support, and post-construction evaluation. This includes performing complex structural analysis, preparing detailed calculations, specifications, and drawings, and conducting site visits to assess structural integrity and monitor construction progress for adherence to design and safety protocols. Furthermore, a critical aspect of this role will be to champion safety in all structural designs, identifying potential hazards, and implementing robust engineering solutions to mitigate risks. You will collaborate closely with architects, project managers, other engineering disciplines, and contractors to ensure seamless project execution and delivery. Key Responsibilities
- Perform structural analysis and design for a wide range of projects, including concrete, steel, timber, and masonry structures, using relevant engineering software and manual calculations.
- Prepare detailed structural drawings, specifications, reports, and calculations in accordance with project requirements, industry standards, and local building codes (e.g., JS 210, IBC).
- Conduct site investigations and inspections to assess existing structural conditions, monitor construction progress, and ensure compliance with design specifications and safety standards.
- Collaborate effectively with architects, M&E engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to integrate structural designs seamlessly within multidisciplinary projects.
- Identify potential structural hazards and implement appropriate design solutions to ensure the safety and longevity of structures.
- Review and approve shop drawings, material submissions, and construction methodologies to verify compliance with design intent and safety regulations.
- Provide technical support and guidance during the construction phase, addressing any structural queries or issues that may arise.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes, standards, and safety protocols within the firm.
- Mentor junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a culture of learning and professional development.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in structural analysis and design software (e.g., SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, RAM Structural System).
- Strong understanding of building codes and standards, particularly Jamaican and international codes (e.g., IBC, ACI, AISC).
- Demonstrated experience in the design of concrete, steel, timber, and masonry structures.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD software for drawing review and mark-ups.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical information clearly.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Structural Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Jamaica or eligibility for registration.
- Experience with seismic design principles and practices.
- Familiarity with local construction practices and material sourcing in Jamaica.
- Project management experience or certifications.
- Proficiency in Revit or other BIM software.
