Job Description
Y.P. Seaton & Associates is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Steel Fixer to join our dynamic construction team in Downtown Kingston. As a Steel Fixer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the structural integrity and durability of our concrete projects. Your primary responsibility will involve accurately cutting, bending, and tying steel reinforcement bars (rebar) into complex cages and frameworks, preparing them for concrete pouring. This position requires a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of construction blueprints and specifications, and an unwavering commitment to safety protocols. You will work closely with site engineers, concrete teams, and other tradespeople to ensure all reinforcement work meets the highest industry standards and project timelines. We are looking for an individual who is physically fit, reliable, and possesses a strong work ethic, ready to contribute to significant construction projects that will stand the test of time. Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and rebar schedules to understand reinforcement requirements.
- Measure, cut, bend, and shape steel reinforcement bars (rebar) to the specified dimensions and angles using manual and power tools.
- Assemble and tie rebar into cages, mats, and frameworks using tie wire and tying tools, ensuring precise spacing and alignment.
- Position and secure rebar assemblies within formwork for concrete pouring, using spacers, chairs, and other supports.
- Assist with the unloading, storage, and handling of steel reinforcement materials on site.
- Adhere strictly to all site safety regulations, company policies, and best practices to maintain a safe working environment.
- Inspect finished rebar work for accuracy and compliance with specifications before concrete placement.
- Collaborate effectively with other construction team members, including concrete workers, carpenters, and site supervisors.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report any defects or malfunctions.
- Identify and resolve minor issues or discrepancies related to rebar placement on site.
- Perform general labouring duties as required to support site operations.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Steel Fixer or Rebar Worker.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction blueprints, schematics, and rebar schedules.
- Skilled in using rebar cutting, bending, and tying tools (e.g., rebar cutter, bender, tie wire twister).
- Strong understanding of various types of steel reinforcement and their applications.
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently, maintaining high standards of quality.
- Good physical stamina and manual dexterity for handling heavy materials and working in various weather conditions.
- Knowledge of construction site safety procedures and practices.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Vocational training or certification in steel fixing, rebar work, or a related construction trade.
- Experience working on large-scale commercial or infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with various types of formwork and concrete pouring techniques.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Valid driver's license.
