In this vital role, you will be responsible for providing expert assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for children and young people experiencing developmental language disorders, specific language impairment, and other complex communication difficulties. Your work will involve developing and implementing individualised therapy plans, collaborating closely with families, carers, educational staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure a holistic approach to care. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive speech and language assessments for children and young people with diverse communication needs, particularly focusing on language development.
  • Formulate differential diagnoses and develop evidence-based, individualised therapy programmes.
  • Deliver direct and indirect speech and language therapy interventions in various settings (clinic, schools, home) to address language difficulties.
  • Collaborate effectively with parents, carers, teachers, and other professionals (e.g., paediatricians, psychologists, OTs) to integrate therapy goals into daily routines and educational plans.
  • Provide advice, training, and support to families and educational staff on communication strategies and language-rich environments.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date clinical records in accordance with Trust policies and professional standards.
  • Participate in regular team meetings, clinical supervision, and contribute to service development initiatives.
  • Manage a varied caseload, prioritising effectively and demonstrating excellent organisational skills.
  • Contribute to student training and supervision where appropriate, fostering a learning environment.

Required Skills

  • BSc or MSc in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent.
  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience as a Speech and Language Therapist, with demonstrable experience in paediatric language support.
  • In-depth knowledge of developmental language disorders and their impact on learning and social development.
  • Proficiency in administering and interpreting a range of standardised and non-standardised language assessments.
  • Proven ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate effective speech and language therapy interventions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-working skills.
  • Strong report writing and record-keeping abilities.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage a caseload effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate training or specialisation in specific language impairment or related areas.
  • Experience working within an NHS paediatric setting.
  • Knowledge of national guidelines and policies related to children's speech and language services.
  • Experience in delivering training to parents or professionals.
  • Familiarity with local educational frameworks and special educational needs provision in Sheffield.
