Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Shipping Agent with a specialization in freight forwarding and customs operations to join our vibrant team in Bogobiri, Calabar. This crucial role involves managing the end-to-end process of cargo movement, ensuring seamless customs clearance, and maintaining robust communication with clients and port authorities. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of Nigerian customs regulations, international shipping procedures, and a proven track record in optimizing logistics workflows. You will be responsible for preparing and processing all necessary documentation for import and export shipments, coordinating with various stakeholders, and resolving any issues that may arise during transit. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate all aspects of freight forwarding, including booking, scheduling, and tracking shipments (import and export).
  • Prepare, process, and verify all necessary shipping and customs documentation, such as bills of lading, manifests, customs entries, and permits.
  • Liaise effectively with customs officials, port authorities, shipping lines, and other regulatory bodies to ensure timely and compliant cargo clearance.
  • Provide expert advice to clients on customs regulations, duties, tariffs, and shipping requirements.
  • Monitor cargo status and provide regular updates to clients, promptly addressing any queries or concerns.
  • Resolve customs-related issues, discrepancies, or delays efficiently to minimize disruption to supply chains.
  • Ensure accurate billing and invoicing for freight and customs services.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local and international shipping laws, trade agreements, and customs procedures.
  • Utilize logistics software and systems to manage data, track shipments, and generate reports.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (operations, sales) to optimize service delivery and client satisfaction.

Required Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of Nigerian Customs and Excise regulations and procedures.
  • Proven experience in freight forwarding and customs clearance operations.
  • Strong understanding of international shipping documentation (BL, AWB, Form M, PAAR, etc.).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Valid professional certification in Customs Brokerage or Freight Forwarding.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., CILT, NAGAFF).
  • Familiarity with specific logistics management software (e.g., SAP, Oracle Logistics).
  • Experience working with a major shipping line or agency.
