Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health and Safety Officer to join our dynamic team in Shomolu, Lagos. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the highest standards of occupational health and safety across our local operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety policies and procedures, ensuring full compliance with Shell’s stringent global standards, as well as Nigerian regulatory requirements. You will play a proactive role in identifying potential hazards, conducting thorough risk assessments, and developing effective mitigation strategies to safeguard our employees, assets, and the environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain Health and Safety policies and procedures in line with Shell's global standards and local regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Provide comprehensive H&S training, inductions, and awareness programs to employees and contractors.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all relevant occupational health and safety legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA) and Shell's internal H&S management system.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate H&S documentation, records, and reports for regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
  • Advise management and staff on H&S performance, trends, and necessary improvements.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, and active engagement with the workforce.

Required Skills

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent professional H&S qualification.
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in Health and Safety management, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or oil & gas environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to conduct effective risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field.
  • Professional certification from the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) or other recognized professional bodies.
  • Experience with integrated management systems (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
  • Certification in First Aid and Fire Safety.
  • Familiarity with Shell's Health and Safety standards and practices.
