Job Description

As a Sailor at Kingston Wharves Limited, you will be an integral part of our marine operations team, directly contributing to the safe and efficient navigation and maintenance of various vessels within our diverse fleet. This role is crucial to supporting our extensive port activities, which include guiding larger vessels through intricate waterways, transporting essential personnel, and ensuring the optimal operational readiness and condition of all marine assets. You will operate under the direct supervision of the Captain or Mate, performing a comprehensive range of duties that encompass all aspects of deck operations, routine and preventative equipment maintenance, strict adherence to safety protocols, and general seamanship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform all deck duties, including mooring, unmooring, anchoring operations, and line handling with precision and safety.
  • Assist in the safe navigation and maneuvering of vessels under the direct supervision of the Captain or Mate.
  • Conduct routine and preventative maintenance of vessel machinery, equipment, and structural components.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all international and local maritime safety regulations and company procedures.
  • Participate in loading and unloading operations, ensuring the secure stowage of cargo, equipment, and supplies.
  • Stand watch as required, maintaining continuous vigilance and accurately reporting all observations.
  • Operate and maintain various deck machinery, including winches, cranes, and other tools.
  • Actively participate in emergency drills and respond effectively to critical situations such as man overboard, fire, and collision.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, orderliness, and general upkeep of the vessel's deck and all working areas.
  • Report any defects, malfunctions, potential hazards, or safety concerns immediately to the supervising officer.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) as a Sailor or in a similar marine operational role.
  • Strong practical understanding of maritime safety protocols, regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL), and vessel operations.
  • Proficiency in line handling, knot tying, rope work, and fundamental seamanship practices.
  • Ability to competently operate and perform basic maintenance on deck machinery and equipment.
  • Excellent physical fitness and stamina, capable of performing demanding work in a marine environment.
  • Strong team player with effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously, work independently when required, and exercise good judgment.
  • Basic first aid and fire fighting knowledge and certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid STCW certification (e.g., Basic Safety Training, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats).
  • Experience specifically with tugboats, pilot boats, or general port support vessels.
  • In-depth knowledge of local navigation routes, channels, and port regulations within Jamaican waters.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for basic engine or system troubleshooting.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent vocational training in maritime studies.
