Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Safety Officer to join our team in Avalon, Alpharetta. This is an immediate hiring opportunity for a dedicated professional who is passionate about creating and maintaining a safe working environment. As a Safety Officer at Rio Tinto, you will play a critical role in upholding our commitment to ‘Zero Harm’ by developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs and protocols. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as Rio Tinto’s stringent global safety standards. This position requires a proactive individual with strong leadership skills, capable of influencing a positive safety culture across all levels of the organization. You will conduct comprehensive risk assessments, lead incident investigations, deliver safety training, and provide expert guidance on best practices. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of occupational health and safety principles, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment. This role is crucial in safeguarding our most valuable asset—our people—and contributing to the overall operational excellence and sustainability of Rio Tinto.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) management systems and procedures in accordance with Rio Tinto standards and regulatory requirements.
 - Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments of workplaces, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
 - Investigate all incidents, near-misses, and accidents to determine root causes, develop corrective actions, and prevent recurrence.
 - Deliver engaging and effective safety training programs to employees, contractors, and visitors on various topics, including hazard recognition, emergency procedures, and safe work practices.
 - Monitor and report on safety performance metrics, identifying trends and recommending improvements to enhance overall safety culture and outcomes.
 - Collaborate with management, employees, and external stakeholders to promote a proactive safety culture and ensure effective communication of safety policies and procedures.
 - Ensure all safety documentation, including permits, records, and reports, are accurately maintained and readily accessible.
 - Lead emergency preparedness and response planning, including drills and training for fire safety, first aid, and other critical situations.
 - Stay abreast of changes in safety regulations, industry best practices, and emerging risks to continuously update and improve safety programs.
 
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in an Occupational Health and Safety role, preferably within heavy industry, manufacturing, or construction.
 - In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant local, state, and federal safety standards.
 - Proven experience with safety management systems (e.g., ISO 45001) and risk assessment methodologies.
 - Strong incident investigation and root cause analysis skills.
 - Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
 - Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
 - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
 - Certification in Occupational Safety and Health (e.g., OSHA 30, CSP, CHST).
 
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
 - Experience working in a global organization or multinational company.
 - Familiarity with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
 - First Aid/CPR certification.
 - Demonstrated ability to influence and lead change in a complex organizational environment.
