Job Description

Caritas Développement Kananga is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and culturally sensitive Research Assistant to join our dynamic team in Kananga. This pivotal role will support our various programs by conducting essential research, data collection, and analysis, contributing significantly to evidence-based decision-making and program effectiveness. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing surveys, conducting interviews and focus group discussions, managing datasets, and assisting in the preparation of reports, policy briefs, and academic publications. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and implementation of research methodologies, including surveys, questionnaires, and qualitative interview guides.
  • Conduct fieldwork for data collection, including interviews, focus group discussions, and observations, often in remote community settings.
  • Manage, organize, and maintain research data using appropriate software and databases, ensuring data quality and integrity.
  • Perform preliminary data analysis, including basic statistical analysis and thematic coding of qualitative data.
  • Contribute to the drafting of research reports, program evaluations, policy briefs, and other relevant documents.
  • Support the preparation of presentations and dissemination materials for various stakeholders, including local communities, donors, and academic partners.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to strategic discussions related to program design and implementation based on research findings.
  • Ensure all research activities adhere strictly to ethical guidelines, data protection protocols, and Caritas’s principles of community engagement and respect.
  • Provide logistical support for research activities, including coordination with local authorities and community leaders.
  • Translate research materials and communications between French and local languages (Tshiluba, Swahili) as required.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Anthropology, Public Health, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in a research-related role, preferably within an NGO, academic institution, or development agency.
  • Proficiency in data collection methodologies, both qualitative and quantitative.
  • Demonstrated experience with data entry, management, and basic analysis software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, ODK, KoboToolbox).
  • Fluent in French (written and spoken) is mandatory.
  • Proficient in at least one local language widely spoken in Kasaï-Central Province (e.g., Tshiluba, Swahili).
  • Strong analytical and excellent report writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with diverse communities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging and dynamic environments.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to remote field locations within Kasaï-Central Province.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with advanced statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata) or qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo).
  • Familiarity with participatory research methods and community-based approaches.
  • Previous experience working in the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially in the Kasaï region.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles and international development frameworks.
  • Driving license and ability to drive a manual vehicle.
