Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth research and investigations to uncover compelling news and feature stories.
- Interview sources, including public officials, community leaders, experts, and citizens, to gather accurate information and diverse perspectives.
- Write clear, concise, and engaging news articles, features, and analytical pieces for print and digital platforms, adhering to style guidelines and journalistic standards.
- Verify facts, cross-reference information, and ensure the accuracy and impartiality of all reported content.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts within various sectors to generate exclusive leads and story ideas.
- Attend press conferences, public events, court proceedings, and community meetings as required to cover stories firsthand.
- Collaborate with photographers, videographers, and editors to produce multimedia content that enhances storytelling.
- Utilize social media and other digital tools for news gathering, promotion, and audience engagement.
- Meet daily and weekly deadlines, often working under pressure in a fast-paced news environment.
- Adhere strictly to journalistic ethics, libel laws, and the company's editorial policies.
- Contribute to editorial planning meetings with fresh ideas and angles for coverage.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Reporter, Journalist, or Content Creator in a media environment.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities in English.
- Strong interviewing and active listening skills.
- Demonstrable research and investigative skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in using digital publishing tools and content management systems.
- Familiarity with journalistic ethics and media law.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, English, or a related field.
- Experience with multimedia content creation (photography, video, audio).
- Proficiency in a second language, particularly Patois.
- Knowledge of local Jamaican politics, culture, and social issues.
- Experience covering specific beats such as crime, politics, business, or arts & culture.
