General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking a highly skilled Remote Technical Editor to join our dynamic team, focusing specifically on ensuring the precision, consistency, and readability of our critical software documentation. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive editorial reviews of software documentation, ensuring accuracy in grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, terminology, and adherence to company, industry, and governmental standards (e.g., MIL-STD, S1000D).
  • Ensure technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency across all software-related documents by thoroughly fact-checking and cross-referencing information with source materials and subject matter experts.
  • Collaborate proactively with software engineers, technical writers, and project managers to clarify complex technical concepts and ensure their precise and effective representation in documentation.
  • Apply established style guides, terminology glossaries, and document templates to maintain uniformity and professionalism across all documentation deliverables.
  • Provide clear, concise, and constructive feedback and recommendations to technical writers and content creators to significantly improve the quality and readability of future drafts.
  • Manage document versions and facilitate efficient review cycles using content management systems (CMS) and other collaboration tools.
  • Actively participate in the development and refinement of documentation standards, processes, and editorial best practices.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining editorial checklists and guidelines specifically tailored for software documentation.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the overall documentation lifecycle and workflow efficiency.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional command of the English language, including advanced grammar, syntax, punctuation, and stylistic conventions.
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven experience in technical editing, with a significant focus on software documentation.
  • Familiarity with various documentation styles and standards (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, AP Style, or military/aerospace standards).
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex technical information, software specifications, and architectural designs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat for document review and markup.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) or document version control software (e.g., SharePoint, Git, SVN).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear, tactful, and constructive feedback to technical personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and independently in a remote environment while maintaining strong collaborative ties with geographically dispersed teams.
  • Acute attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality, error-free, and compliant deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working within the defense, aerospace, or heavy engineering industry.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies and their impact on documentation.
  • Experience with XML authoring tools (e.g., Oxygen XML Editor) or DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture).
  • Knowledge of documentation requirements for embedded systems or highly regulated technical environments.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance, which may be required for certain projects.
