Key Responsibilities
- Accurately assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and other relevant codes to diagnoses and procedures documented in patient medical records across various specialties.
- Conduct thorough reviews of clinical documentation to ensure all services rendered are comprehensively supported and properly coded for optimal reimbursement and regulatory compliance.
- Proactively clarify ambiguous or incomplete documentation with healthcare providers when necessary to ensure coding accuracy and completeness.
- Stay meticulously current with evolving coding guidelines, regulatory changes, and compliance requirements, including specific NHS coding standards and national tariffs.
- Efficiently resolve coding discrepancies, claim denials, and rejections in a timely and effective manner.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient health information and rigorously adhere to all relevant data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR).
- Actively participate in ongoing training programmes and continuous professional development initiatives to consistently enhance coding knowledge and skills.
- Contribute constructively to continuous improvement initiatives within the medical coding department and broader administrative functions.
- Provide comprehensive support during internal and external audits by furnishing necessary documentation and clear explanations of coding decisions.
Required Skills
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or an equivalent, nationally recognised coding certification.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in medical coding, preferably gained within a hospital or a multi-specialty clinic setting.
- Demonstrable proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
- Comprehensive understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology, and complex disease processes.
