Job Description

Are you a skilled and safety-conscious individual with a passion for railway infrastructure? BAM Nuttall is seeking a dedicated Railway Technician with a specialisation in Track & Equipment Maintenance to join our team in Kincorth, Aberdeen. This pivotal role involves the upkeep and repair of railway tracks, signalling equipment, and associated machinery, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of one of the UK’s most vital transport networks. You will be responsible for conducting routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and reactive repairs on tracks, points, crossings, and various rail plant equipment. This is a hands-on role where your technical expertise directly contributes to the safety of passengers and freight, as well as the operational continuity of the rail lines. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of railway track infrastructure, including rails, sleepers, ballast, and points.
  • Conduct preventative and reactive maintenance on various railway plant and equipment, ensuring operational readiness and safety compliance.
  • Diagnose faults and carry out effective repairs on mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of railway machinery.
  • Operate specialist track maintenance equipment safely and efficiently, following all company and industry safety regulations.
  • Adhere strictly to railway operating procedures, safety standards (e.g., PTS), and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineering teams, project managers, and other technicians to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Participate in emergency call-out rotations as required to respond to critical infrastructure issues.
  • Identify and report potential hazards or defects in railway infrastructure and equipment.
  • Support the installation and commissioning of new track sections and associated equipment.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Railway Technician or similar role in track maintenance.
  • Valid Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification.
  • Demonstrable experience with railway plant and equipment (e.g., tampers, grinders, small plant).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and fault-finding skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of hand and power tools for maintenance and repair.
  • Excellent understanding of railway safety regulations and working practices.
  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes unsocial hours.
  • Full UK Driving License.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Rail Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with heavy plant operation and maintenance in a railway environment.
  • Knowledge of signalling and telecommunications systems.
  • COSS (Controller of Site Safety) or OLP (Operating Line Protector) qualification.
  • First Aid at Work certification.
  • Relevant CSCS card.
