Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and monitor vessel movements, berthing, and unberthing operations within the port area, ensuring adherence to schedules and safety protocols.
  • Supervise cargo handling, storage, and dispatch activities, optimizing resource allocation (equipment, personnel) for maximum efficiency.
  • Implement and enforce port safety, security, and environmental regulations in line with national and international maritime standards.
  • Prepare comprehensive operational reports, incident reports, and performance analyses for management review.
  • Liaise effectively with shipping agents, customs officials, stevedoring companies, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless operations.
  • Manage and resolve operational issues, bottlenecks, and unforeseen challenges promptly and effectively.
  • Conduct regular inspections of port facilities, equipment, and operational areas to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Train and mentor junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new operational strategies and technologies to enhance port efficiency.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Logistics, Transport Management, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in port operations, shipping, or supply chain management.
  • In-depth knowledge of maritime regulations (IMO, ISPS Code, SOLAS) and port management principles.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and make sound decisions in dynamic environments.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Professional certifications in port management, logistics, or project management (e.g., PMP, CILT).
  • Experience with Port Community Systems (PCS) or other port management software.
  • Knowledge of local maritime laws and regulations specific to Nigerian ports.
