Job Description

We are seeking a meticulous and experienced Payroll Specialist to join our dynamic Finance team, specifically focusing on salary processing. This pivotal role is based in our Nottingham office, playing a crucial part in ensuring the accurate and timely payment of salaries to our dedicated colleagues across the UK. As a Payroll Specialist, you will be responsible for the end-to-end processing of complex payroll cycles, ensuring strict adherence to company policies, HMRC regulations, and statutory requirements. You will manage various payroll inputs, including new hires, leavers, salary changes, bonuses, and deductions, meticulously verifying data for accuracy before processing. This role requires a strong understanding of payroll legislation, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to handle sensitive information with the utmost discretion and confidentiality. You will collaborate closely with HR, finance, and other internal departments to resolve queries and streamline payroll processes. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end processing of weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly payrolls for a large employee base.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of all salary-related data, including new starters, leavers, promotions, transfers, and changes to terms and conditions.
  • Calculate and process statutory deductions such as PAYE, National Insurance, SSP, SMP, SPP, and student loans.
  • Process and reconcile various voluntary deductions, including pensions, cycle to work schemes, and charitable giving.
  • Administer year-end procedures, including P60s, P11Ds, and HMRC submissions.
  • Resolve payroll discrepancies by collecting and analysing information, liaising with HR and employees as necessary.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation and internal policies to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare payroll reports for finance and management, assisting with audits and reconciliations.
  • Respond to employee payroll queries in a professional and timely manner, providing clear and accurate information.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the payroll function to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Payroll Specialist or similar role in a large organisation.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, National Insurance, and statutory payments.
  • Strong proficiency in payroll software (e.g., SAP, ADP, Oracle) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CIPP qualification (or working towards).
  • Experience with HRIS systems integration with payroll.
  • Knowledge of pension scheme administration (e.g., auto-enrolment).
  • Experience working in a complex, high-volume payroll environment.
