Job Description

Black & Lizars is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Optical Assistant to join our thriving eye clinic service in Aberdeen. This pivotal role involves being the first point of contact for many of our patients, playing a crucial part in their journey towards better vision. You will work alongside experienced Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians, contributing to a seamless and supportive patient experience from start to finish. Your day will be varied and engaging, encompassing everything from welcoming patients and scheduling appointments to conducting pre-screening tests, assisting with frame selection, and providing expert advice on contact lenses and accessories. We are looking for someone who combines excellent communication skills with a genuine desire to provide outstanding customer service. Key Responsibilities
- Warmly welcome patients, manage appointments, and handle general enquiries in person and over the phone.
- Conduct pre-screening tests, including visual acuity, field screening, and auto-refraction, accurately recording results for the Optometrist.
- Assist patients in selecting suitable frames and lenses, considering their lifestyle, prescription, and aesthetic preferences.
- Provide comprehensive advice on contact lens wear and care, ordering, and fitting sessions.
- Perform minor repairs and adjustments to spectacles, ensuring patient comfort and satisfaction.
- Manage and maintain stock levels of frames, lenses, and optical accessories, including processing orders and deliveries.
- Accurately process payments, maintain patient records, and ensure confidentiality in line with GDPR guidelines.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organisation of the practice, including reception and dispensary areas.
- Support the Optometrist and Dispensing Optician team with various clinical and administrative tasks as required.
- Actively participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance optical knowledge and skills.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-first approach.
- Strong customer service orientation and the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail, especially when handling patient information and optical products.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) and the ability to learn new software quickly.

- Demonstrated reliability and punctuality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a customer service or retail environment, ideally within a healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of optical products, terminology, and practice management software.
- An NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Optical Care or equivalent qualification.
- Familiarity with NHS optical services and processes.
