Job Description
General Medical Laboratories is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Technician to join our dynamic team in May Pen. This pivotal role involves performing a wide array of laboratory tests, managing patient samples from collection to analysis, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all results. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will be instrumental in supporting clinical diagnoses and patient care through precise execution of laboratory procedures across various departments including phlebotomy, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and serology. Your daily tasks will include receiving and processing patient specimens, conducting a range of diagnostic tests using both automated and manual techniques, and meticulously analyzing results. You will operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, troubleshoot minor issues, and calibrate instruments to guarantee optimal performance. Adherence to strict quality control protocols, documentation of all findings, and maintaining meticulous records are paramount to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies. This position requires a strong understanding of laboratory safety regulations, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of routine and complex medical laboratory tests and procedures on patient samples, including blood, urine, and other bodily fluids, across multiple disciplines (e.g., hematology, chemistry, microbiology, serology).
- Properly collect, process, and prepare patient samples for testing, ensuring accurate identification and appropriate handling to maintain sample integrity.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment and instruments, troubleshooting minor issues as they arise.
- Conduct quality control procedures, evaluate results, and implement corrective actions as necessary to ensure test accuracy and reliability.
- Document all test results, quality control data, and instrument maintenance logs meticulously, ensuring compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.
- Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality assurance guidelines.
- Assist in the preparation of reagents and solutions, ensuring proper labeling and storage.
- Communicate critical lab results to authorized personnel promptly and accurately.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to stay current with advancements in laboratory technology and practices.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Required Skills
- Associate's Degree or Diploma in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical setting.
- Proficiency in performing laboratory tests across hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and serology.
- Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment effectively.
- Strong understanding of quality control principles and laboratory safety regulations.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and documenting results.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.
- Certification from a recognized professional body (e.g., ASCP, MLT(CSMLS)).
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Familiarity with Jamaican healthcare regulations and laboratory accreditation standards.
