Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare consultation rooms, ensuring they are clean, tidy, and fully stocked with necessary equipment and supplies before and after patient appointments.
  • Assist GPs and nurses with minor procedures, examinations, and patient care activities as required, maintaining patient comfort and safety.
  • Perform basic clinical duties such as taking and recording vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration), height, and weight.
  • Manage and organise patient medical records, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and efficient retrieval of information (both electronic and paper-based).
  • Handle patient enquiries, provide information, and guide patients through clinic processes with a professional and compassionate demeanour.
  • Process laboratory requests, manage samples, and ensure results are accurately filed and communicated to the relevant clinician.
  • Monitor and maintain medical stock levels, ordering supplies as needed, and ensuring all equipment is properly cleaned and calibrated.
  • Assist with administrative tasks including scheduling appointments, managing referrals, and handling incoming and outgoing correspondence.
  • Ensure adherence to all health and safety regulations, infection control policies, and data protection guidelines (GDPR).
  • Support the broader clinical team by undertaking ad-hoc duties to ensure the smooth running of the surgery.

Required Skills

  • Prior experience (minimum 1 year) in a healthcare support role or similar clinical setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-first approach.
  • Strong organisational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and willingness to learn specific medical software.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A compassionate, empathetic, and professional attitude.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and data protection principles (GDPR).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational qualification in healthcare support, medical administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with SystmOne or other NHS patient management systems.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
