Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Mechanical Engineer to join our operations team in Cookridge, Leeds. This critical role is centered on ensuring the uninterrupted and efficient operation of our plant machinery and essential equipment. As a Mechanical Engineer specializing in Plant Operations & Equipment Repair, you will be responsible for a comprehensive range of tasks, from implementing and overseeing routine preventative maintenance schedules to diagnosing complex mechanical faults and executing timely, effective repairs. Your expertise will be crucial in minimizing downtime, optimizing equipment performance, and ensuring all operational activities strictly adhere to the highest safety, quality, and environmental standards.
This is a hands-on role that demands a deep understanding of diverse mechanical systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, rotating machinery, and precision components. You will be expected to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including production, electrical, and safety departments, to identify root causes of equipment failures, develop innovative solutions, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. Beyond reactive maintenance, you will be instrumental in proactive equipment life cycle management, recommending upgrades, modifications, and replacement strategies to enhance reliability and efficiency. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and a proven track record in a similar industrial environment. Key Responsibilities
- Execute preventative and predictive maintenance on all plant mechanical equipment to ensure optimal performance and extend asset life.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective, long-lasting repair solutions.
- Perform skilled repairs and overhauls of industrial machinery, including pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
- Utilize precision measurement tools and diagnostic equipment to assess equipment condition and identify potential failures.
- Ensure all maintenance and repair activities comply with relevant safety regulations, company policies, and environmental standards.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and spare parts inventory.
- Collaborate with production and engineering teams to identify opportunities for process improvement, equipment upgrades, and reliability enhancements.
- Participate in the commissioning of new equipment and plant modifications.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on reducing downtime and increasing operational efficiency.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior technicians and operational staff as required.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in plant maintenance, equipment repair, or mechanical engineering within an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating machinery.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and problem-solving complex mechanical failures.
- Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively in a team environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with condition monitoring techniques (e.g., vibration analysis, thermography).
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Professional engineering license (e.g., CEng) or working towards one.
- Experience with welding, fabrication, and machining techniques.
