Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Marine Engineer to join our operational team in Bunia, Ituri Province. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the comprehensive maintenance, repair, and operational integrity of SNCC’s diverse fleet of vessels operating across the regional waterways, including Lake Albert and connected river systems. Your expertise will ensure the seamless and safe operation of our marine assets, which are crucial for transporting goods and passengers. This position demands a proactive professional with a strong understanding of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, hull structures, and safety protocols. You will lead maintenance efforts, conduct routine inspections, troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues, and implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of our fleet. The successful candidate will be a hands-on engineer capable of working independently and collaboratively with vessel crews, ensuring that all engineering aspects comply with national and international maritime standards. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all marine engineering systems, including main engines, auxiliary engines, generators, pumps, and other vessel machinery.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults on vessels and implement effective repair solutions.
- Conduct regular inspections of vessel engines, machinery, and hull structures to identify potential issues and ensure seaworthiness.
- Oversee and participate in major repairs, overhauls, and refits of marine equipment.
- Manage spare parts inventory, procure necessary components, and maintain accurate maintenance records and logs.
- Ensure strict adherence to all national and international maritime regulations, safety standards, and environmental protection protocols.
- Collaborate closely with vessel captains and crew to coordinate maintenance schedules and address operational challenges.
- Develop and implement robust preventive maintenance programs to optimize vessel performance and reduce operational risks.
- Provide technical guidance and training to junior engineers and vessel crew on proper equipment operation and basic maintenance procedures.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports on maintenance activities, equipment condition, and repair costs.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of proven experience as a Marine Engineer, preferably in a vessel maintenance or operational role.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines (e.g., Caterpillar, Cummins, MAN), propulsion systems, and auxiliary machinery.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Familiarity with maritime safety regulations and environmental protection standards.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and service manuals.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Strong communication skills in French and Lingala (written and verbal); English is an asset.
- Physical fitness and ability to work in challenging marine environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant STCW certifications (e.g., Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch, Chief Engineer).
- Experience with freshwater vessel operations (lakes and rivers).
- Proven experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Leadership experience or supervisory roles in a marine engineering team.
- Welding and fabrication skills.
- Knowledge of specific vessel types operated by SNCC (e.g., various passenger ferries, cargo barges).
