Job Description

The Nigerian Ports Authority is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Marine Engineer to join our dynamic team in Uyo. This pivotal role involves overseeing the technical aspects of marine operations, ensuring the optimal functionality, safety, and efficiency of our diverse fleet of vessels, operational craft, and critical port equipment. As a Marine Engineer with NPA, you will be instrumental in the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of marine engines, propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and associated equipment, adhering strictly to national and international maritime regulations. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of marine engines, propulsion systems, generators, and auxiliary machinery on NPA vessels and equipment.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults, implementing timely and effective solutions to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Develop and execute planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules in accordance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure strict adherence to national and international maritime regulations (IMO, NIMASA) pertaining to safety, environmental protection, and operational standards.
  • Manage spare parts inventory, preparing requisitions for procurement and ensuring availability of critical components.
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineering staff and technicians, promoting best practices and skill development.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports on maintenance activities, equipment performance, and incidents.
  • Participate in vessel dry-docking, major overhauls, and new equipment installations.
  • Implement and enforce safety procedures and policies to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of engineering policies and procedures.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience as a Marine Engineer, preferably in a port authority, shipping company, or maritime agency.
  • Strong knowledge of marine propulsion systems, diesel engines, auxiliary machinery, and power generation systems.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • In-depth understanding of maritime safety regulations, environmental protection standards, and classification society rules.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and diagnostic skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively in a team.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer software for maintenance management and reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Marine Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class 1 or 2 (Motor) issued by NIMASA or an internationally recognized authority.
  • Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, ISM Code, or ISPS Code.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Familiarity with dredging equipment and operations.
  • Project management experience in a maritime context.
