Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate life insurance applications, medical reports, financial statements, and other underwriting evidence to assess risk.
  • Determine eligibility for coverage, appropriate risk classifications, and policy terms.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to agents, advisors, and internal partners.
  • Manage a pipeline of cases efficiently, prioritizing based on urgency and complexity.
  • Collaborate with medical directors, actuarial teams, and sales professionals to resolve complex underwriting issues.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of underwriting guidelines, industry trends, and regulatory changes.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Contribute to process improvements and best practices within the underwriting department.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in life insurance underwriting or a related financial risk assessment role.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in interpreting medical information and financial data.
  • Ability to make sound, independent decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency with underwriting software and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
  • Industry designations such as FLMI (Fellow, Life Management Institute), ALU (Associate, Life Underwriting), or CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter).
  • Experience with automated underwriting systems.
  • Familiarity with Manulife/John Hancock products and services.
