Job Description

Birmingham City Council is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Library Assistant to join our team at the Bournville Library, a beloved public facility at the heart of the community. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual who loves working with people, has an organised approach, and a genuine interest in promoting literacy and learning across all age groups. As a Library Assistant, you will be the welcoming face of our library, playing a pivotal role in ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all visitors. Your daily tasks will range from assisting patrons with book selections, managing borrowings and returns, to helping them navigate our digital resources and public computers. You’ll support a variety of library programs, from children’s story times to adult learning workshops, helping to create an engaging and dynamic environment that encourages lifelong learning and social interaction. We are looking for someone who is not only efficient in administrative tasks but also has a proactive approach to customer service, is comfortable with technology, and possesses excellent communication skills. You will contribute to maintaining the library’s collection, ensuring shelves are tidy and materials are accessible, and helping with general administrative duties. Key Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service, assisting library users with enquiries, book selections, and general information.
- Manage the circulation desk, including processing loans, returns, reservations, and new registrations using the library management system.
- Assist users with public access computers, printing, scanning, and other digital resources.
- Support the delivery of library events and activities, such as children's story times, reading groups, and digital literacy workshops.
- Maintain the organisation and tidiness of library collections, including shelving books and other materials accurately.
- Handle cash transactions for fines, printing, and other services, ensuring accuracy and security.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all library visitors.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including processing new stock, cataloguing support, and inter-library loan requests.
- Promote library services and resources to encourage community engagement and usage.
- Report maintenance issues or security concerns to appropriate staff members.
Required Skills

Preferred Qualifications

- Familiarity with digital resources and online research tools.
