Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and experienced Legal Officer to join our dynamic legal team in Ikot Ekpene Village, Uyo. This is an immediate start, full-time position offering a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to the legal framework and operational integrity of the Nigerian Ports Authority. The successful candidate will be instrumental in providing expert legal counsel, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and representing the Authority in various legal matters. This role demands a sharp legal mind, strong analytical skills, and an unwavering commitment to justice and corporate governance within the maritime sector. You will play a critical role in safeguarding NPA’s interests, mitigating legal risks, and supporting its strategic objectives through sound legal practices and proactive advice, dealing with complex legal challenges facing a major government parastatal.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide timely and accurate legal advice, opinions, and interpretations on a wide range of legal issues affecting the Authority's operations.
- Represent the Authority in litigation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution proceedings.
- Draft, review, and negotiate various legal documents, including contracts, agreements, memoranda of understanding, and policies.
- Ensure the Authority's compliance with all applicable Nigerian laws, regulations, and international conventions relating to maritime activities and public sector governance.
- Conduct thorough legal research and analysis on complex legal questions and emerging legal trends.
- Assist in the formulation and review of internal policies, guidelines, and procedures to align with legal requirements and best practices.
- Liaise with external solicitors, government agencies, and other stakeholders on legal matters.
- Prepare legal reports, briefs, and presentations for management and board meetings.
- Participate in legal training and development programs for NPA staff.
- Manage and maintain accurate records of all legal documents and proceedings.
Required Skills
- Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
- Minimum of 4 years post-call experience in active legal practice or an in-house legal department.
- Sound knowledge of Nigerian corporate, commercial, administrative, and maritime law.
- Proven experience in litigation, legal drafting, and contract review.
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal abilities.
- High ethical standards and integrity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Law (LL.M), preferably with a specialization in Maritime Law, Commercial Law, or Public Law.
- Previous experience working with a government parastatal, public sector organization, or a reputable law firm specializing in corporate/commercial law.
- Demonstrable experience in regulatory compliance and risk management.
