As a Legal Officer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the company’s operations adhere to all statutory and regulatory requirements, mitigating legal risks, and safeguarding the company’s interests. You will be instrumental in providing expert legal advice across various departments, drafting and reviewing contracts, managing litigation, and supporting corporate secretarial functions. Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive legal advice and support to all departments regarding corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of legal documents, including contracts, agreements, policies, and other corporate instruments.
- Ensure the company's compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and corporate governance standards.
- Manage and oversee external legal counsel relationships and external litigation.
- Conduct legal research and provide opinions on complex legal issues affecting the company's operations.
- Assist in the preparation of board and committee meeting papers and resolutions.
- Identify and mitigate potential legal risks across the company's operations.
- Represent the company in discussions and negotiations with external parties, regulatory bodies, and government agencies.
- Support the company secretarial function as required.
- Keep abreast of changes in relevant legislation and regulatory requirements and advise on their implications.
Required Skills
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from a recognized university
- Call to the Nigerian Bar (BL)
- Minimum of 4 years post-call experience in corporate/commercial law, preferably within a reputable law firm or an in-house legal department of a large corporation.
- Strong understanding of Nigerian corporate law, regulatory frameworks, and compliance requirements.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills (oral and written).
- Proven ability to conduct thorough legal research and analysis.
- High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and professional judgment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree (LL.M.) in a relevant field.
- Experience in the manufacturing, agro-allied, or oil & gas sectors.
- Membership in relevant professional associations (e.g., NBA, ICSAN).
- Familiarity with international best practices in corporate governance.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
