Job Description
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Lecturer at our proposed study centre in Ogudu, Kosofe. This is an exciting opportunity for passionate and dedicated academics to contribute to the university’s mission of providing flexible and accessible quality education. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering engaging lectures, facilitating learning, conducting research, and providing academic support to students within their area of specialization. This role requires a strong commitment to academic excellence, innovative teaching methodologies tailored for an open and distance learning environment, and a proactive approach to student engagement. Lecturers at NOUN are expected to be thought leaders in their fields, contributing to the development of course materials, participating in academic committees, and representing the university at relevant conferences and workshops. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and deliver lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate students using appropriate ODL methodologies.
- Develop and update course materials, study guides, and online learning resources to meet curriculum requirements and ODL standards.
- Assess and evaluate student performance through assignments, examinations, and other assessment methods, providing timely feedback.
- Engage in academic advising and mentorship, guiding students on their academic progress and career paths.
- Conduct original research in your area of expertise, publish findings in reputable journals, and present at national and international conferences.
- Supervise student projects, dissertations, and theses, ensuring academic rigor and ethical conduct.
- Participate in curriculum review and development activities to ensure courses remain current and relevant.
- Contribute to the academic and administrative life of the study centre and university through committee participation and other assigned duties.
- Stay abreast of developments in your field and incorporate new knowledge and best practices into teaching and research.
- Utilize technology effectively to enhance the learning experience and facilitate communication with students.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated expertise in a relevant academic discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Education, Business Administration, Environmental Science, Mass Communication, Law, etc.).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and engagingly.
- Proven ability to teach effectively in an open and distance learning (ODL) environment, utilizing online platforms and virtual tools.
- Strong research capabilities with a record of scholarly publications or potential for research output.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse academic community.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and willingness to adapt to new educational technologies.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to student support and mentorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline from a recognized university.
- Prior lecturing experience in a tertiary institution, particularly in an ODL setting.
