Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Safety Officer to join our dynamic team at our Mgbuoba facility in Port Harcourt. This is a critical role designed for an individual who is passionate about cultivating and maintaining an exemplary culture of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) excellence across all operational facets. As a Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in the meticulous implementation, diligent monitoring, and rigorous enforcement of Lafarge Africa’s robust HSE policies and procedures. Your primary objective will be to ensure absolute compliance with both our stringent internal standards and all pertinent Nigerian regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will possess a proactive mindset, an exceptional eye for detail, superior communication skills, and an unwavering commitment to accident prevention and the promotion of safe work practices. Your responsibilities will include conducting regular, comprehensive site inspections, performing thorough risk assessments, and executing detailed safety audits. You will be tasked with identifying potential hazards swiftly and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions. Your expertise will be invaluable in developing and delivering engaging, impactful safety training programs for both our employees and contractors, thereby ensuring that every individual is equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to perform their duties safely and responsibly. Key Responsibilities
- Implement and rigorously enforce Lafarge Africa's HSE policies, procedures, and standards across the Mgbuoba facility.
- Conduct regular, comprehensive site inspections, hazard identification, and meticulous risk assessments to ensure a consistently safe working environment.
- Develop, deliver, and critically evaluate engaging and effective HSE training programs for all employees, contractors, and site visitors.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses thoroughly, determining root causes and recommending precise corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure full compliance with all local and national HSE regulations, including those mandated by OSHA, NESREA, and other relevant regulatory bodies.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all HSE activities, incidents, training sessions, and inspections.
- Prepare and submit regular, insightful HSE performance reports to facility and senior management.
- Advise management proactively on all HSE-related issues and propose continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety performance.
- Organize and conduct emergency drills, ensuring that emergency response plans are current, comprehensive, and highly effective.
- Promote a strong, proactive safety culture through innovative awareness campaigns and continuous, proactive engagement with all staff members.
- Manage safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) inventory, ensuring proper usage, maintenance, and availability.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) role, preferably within a heavy industry or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian HSE legislation, standards, and international best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex safety concepts clearly.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for effective root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct effective safety training and engaging presentations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of HSE management.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or an equivalent recognized HSE certification.
- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Environmental Health, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria – ISPON).
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) management systems.
- Current First Aid and Fire Safety certification.
