Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Laboratory Technician to join our dynamic diagnostic team at Alpha Specialist Hospital. As a Laboratory Technician, you will play a crucial role in delivering accurate and timely diagnostic results, which are fundamental to effective patient care. Your responsibilities will encompass a broad range of laboratory procedures, from sample collection and processing to performing various analyses across different departments, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and serology. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict safety and quality control protocols, and the ability to operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver, committed to continuous learning, and possess excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with medical staff and contribute to a seamless patient experience. You will be instrumental in ensuring the reliability of our diagnostic services, directly impacting the quality of healthcare we provide to our patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, label, and process patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) accurately and safely.
- Perform a variety of laboratory tests and analyses, including chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic examinations.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, troubleshooting minor issues as they arise.
- Ensure strict adherence to quality control procedures and participate in proficiency testing programs.
- Accurately record and document test results, ensuring proper entry into laboratory information systems.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, strictly following biosafety and waste disposal protocols.
- Prepare reagents, stains, and solutions according to established laboratory procedures.
- Assist in the management of laboratory inventory and supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels.
- Communicate effectively with medical staff regarding test results, specimen requirements, and any issues.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities to stay current with laboratory practices.
Required Skills
- Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) certification or equivalent.
- Proven experience as a Laboratory Technician in a health/diagnostic setting (minimum 1 year).
- Proficiency in performing a wide range of laboratory tests and analyses.
- Strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols and quality control procedures.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all laboratory tasks.
- Ability to operate and maintain various laboratory equipment.
- Good computer literacy, including experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
- Experience with specialized diagnostic equipment or advanced testing methodologies.
- Familiarity with ISO 15189 standards for medical laboratories.
- Additional certifications in specific laboratory disciplines (e.g., phlebotomy, microbiology).
