Job Description
Hope Waddell Training Institution is seeking a diligent and enthusiastic Lab Assistant to join our dedicated science department. This pivotal full-time role involves providing essential support to our secondary school science teachers and students across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. You will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth and safe operation of our science laboratories, fostering an environment where practical learning thrives. The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation, setup, and dismantling of experimental apparatus, maintaining laboratory equipment, managing chemical inventories, and ensuring strict adherence to health and safety regulations. You will work closely with teachers to anticipate lesson requirements, solve practical challenges, and ensure that all necessary resources are available and in excellent working condition for engaging and effective science lessons. Your contribution will directly impact the quality of practical science education our students receive, making science accessible, exciting, and safe for all.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and set up apparatus, experiments, and demonstrations for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics lessons as requested by teaching staff.
- Assist teachers and students during practical sessions, providing guidance on equipment use and safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate inventory records of chemicals, reagents, glassware, and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage.
- Conduct routine checks, maintenance, and minor repairs of laboratory equipment to ensure optimal functionality and extend lifespan.
- Ensure strict adherence to health and safety regulations, including proper disposal of chemical waste and maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment.
- Source and procure necessary laboratory supplies and materials in collaboration with the Head of Science Department.
- Develop and update safety data sheets (SDS) for chemicals and maintain an up-to-date record of safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Strong foundational knowledge in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, suitable for a secondary school curriculum.
- Proficiency in setting up and dismantling standard laboratory equipment and experiments.
- Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail for inventory management and record-keeping.
- Demonstrated commitment to health and safety protocols within a laboratory setting.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with teachers and interact with students.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks efficiently.
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and resource management.
Preferred Qualifications
- An OND or HND in Science Laboratory Technology, Applied Sciences, or a related field.
- Previous experience working in a school or educational laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of basic first aid and emergency procedures for a laboratory setting.
