Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled, culturally astute, and professionally discreet Interpreter to join our dynamic team, specializing in event translation and conference support. This pivotal role involves facilitating seamless communication between diverse groups of individuals during a variety of high-profile events hosted at Davok Suites, including international conferences, strategic business meetings, interactive workshops, and significant social gatherings. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing accurate, nuanced, and contextually appropriate interpretation, primarily between English and other designated languages, ensuring that all participants can fully engage, understand, and contribute to the content presented. Beyond impeccable linguistic precision, this role demands a strong understanding of cultural contexts, a poised and professional demeanor, and the ability to work effectively under pressure in fast-paced and demanding environments. Key Responsibilities
- Provide simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpretation during conferences, meetings, presentations, and other events, ensuring accuracy and fluency.
- Accurately convey meaning, tone, and nuance from source language to target language, maintaining fidelity to the original message and speaker's intent.
- Act as a cultural liaison, bridging communication gaps and fostering understanding among participants from diverse national and linguistic backgrounds.
- Prepare extensively for interpretation assignments by researching subject matter, specific terminology, speaker backgrounds, and event objectives to ensure highly informed interpretation.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality and strict impartiality in all interpretation assignments, adhering to professional ethical guidelines.
- Assist with the setup, testing, and troubleshooting of interpretation equipment (e.g., booths, headsets, microphones) as needed before and during events.
- Collaborate effectively and proactively with event organizers, speakers, presenters, and other conference staff to ensure smooth and successful event execution.
- Perform ad-hoc sight translation or short document translation of materials, presentations, or other documents as required during live events.
- Adapt interpretation style, pace, and register to suit the speaker, audience, and the specific context and formality of the event.
- Provide professional support, guidance, and insights on cross-cultural communication best practices to event participants and organizers.
Required Skills
- Native-level fluency in English and at least one other major Nigerian language (e.g., Ibibio, Efik, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba) or an internationally recognized language (e.g., French, German, Spanish).
- Proven experience in simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation, with a strong portfolio, preferably in a conference, corporate, or governmental event setting.
- Exceptional listening comprehension, memory retention, and articulation skills.
- Strong vocabulary across a broad range of subjects, including business, technology, politics, and general affairs.
- Excellent cultural sensitivity and a deep understanding of cross-cultural communication nuances and etiquette.
- Ability to concentrate for extended periods and perform accurately and efficiently under significant pressure.
- Proficiency with modern interpretation equipment and basic audio-visual setup.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, punctuality, and unwavering ethical conduct.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks, and excellent time management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Linguistics, Translation Studies, International Relations, Communication, or a closely related field.
- Professional certification in interpretation from a recognized national or international body (e.g., AIIC, ATA, NAATI).
- Additional language proficiencies beyond the primary working languages, especially in languages relevant to international business or diplomacy.
- Previous experience working within the hospitality sector, large-scale event management, or international organizations.
- Familiarity with various subject matters relevant to common conference topics (e.g., oil & gas, public administration, education, technology, healthcare).
- Demonstrated ability to handle diverse accents, speaking styles, and presentation formats effectively.
