Job Description
We are actively seeking a highly skilled and diligent Control Room Operator to join our critical operations team in Downers Grove, Illinois. This is an immediate start position for a professional who thrives in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment where precision and quick decision-making are paramount. As a Control Room Operator, you will be at the heart of our operations, responsible for the real-time monitoring, control, and optimization of our electrical grid infrastructure. Your expertise will ensure the uninterrupted flow of power, rapid response to system anomalies, and coordination with field crews during maintenance and emergency situations. Key aspects of this role involve continuous surveillance of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, analyzing complex data to predict and prevent potential issues, and executing switching operations. Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and control the electrical transmission and distribution system using SCADA and other advanced control systems.
- Respond promptly and effectively to system alarms, disturbances, and emergencies to ensure grid stability and safety.
- Execute switching orders, clearances, and operational procedures in strict accordance with safety regulations and operational guidelines.
- Coordinate with field crews, maintenance personnel, and other departments to facilitate scheduled and emergency work.
- Analyze system data, trends, and performance to identify potential issues and optimize grid operations.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports of system events, operational changes, and incident responses.
- Ensure compliance with all NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) standards and other regulatory requirements.
- Participate in emergency drills and training programs to enhance response capabilities and operational readiness.
- Communicate critical information clearly and concisely to relevant stakeholders during normal and abnormal operating conditions.
Required Skills
- Proficiency with SCADA systems and other energy management systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical power system fundamentals (generation, transmission, distribution).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex system issues.
- Demonstrated ability to make critical decisions rapidly and effectively under pressure.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Commitment to safety protocols and regulatory compliance.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Technology, or a related field.
- NERC System Operator certification (Transmission Operator or Reliability Coordinator).
- Prior experience in an electrical utility control room or similar operational environment.
- Experience with real-time operational tools and outage management systems.
- Familiarity with relevant local, state, and federal energy regulations.
