Job Description

Sandals Negril is actively seeking a skilled, highly motivated, and safety-conscious Heavy Equipment Operator with demonstrated expertise in operating forklifts and loaders to join our vital maintenance and grounds team. This crucial role is instrumental in maintaining the pristine condition of our expansive resort grounds, ensuring efficient material handling, and supporting various operational projects across the property. As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will be primarily responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery, specifically forklifts for material transport and stacking, and loaders for tasks such as moving aggregates, soil, waste, and assisting with large-scale landscaping and construction support initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts safely and efficiently for loading, unloading, stacking, and transporting various materials and supplies within the resort.
  • Operate front-end loaders for tasks such as moving soil, sand, gravel, debris, waste, and other bulk materials for landscaping, construction support, and waste management.
  • Conduct daily pre-operation inspections, including checking fluid levels, tires, lights, brakes, and safety devices, on all assigned heavy equipment.
  • Perform routine minor maintenance tasks on equipment and promptly report any mechanical malfunctions, damage, or safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and relevant occupational health and safety regulations, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure equipment is properly cleaned, maintained, and securely stored after each use, or at the end of the shift.
  • Collaborate effectively with other resort departments to support their operational needs, ensuring timely and efficient completion of tasks.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, contributing to overall site safety and efficiency.
  • Accurately complete daily logs, inspection reports, and other required documentation for equipment usage and maintenance.
  • Assist with other manual labor tasks as required, supporting the overall efficiency and cleanliness of the resort grounds.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of proven experience operating forklifts and front-end loaders in a commercial, industrial, or large-scale facility setting.
  • Possession of a valid heavy equipment operator's license or relevant certification recognized in Jamaica.
  • In-depth understanding and strict adherence to all safety protocols, procedures, and regulations pertaining to heavy machinery operation.
  • Exceptional spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, and precision in operating equipment.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for conducting pre-operation checks and identifying potential equipment issues.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while adhering to schedules and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent vocational training.
  • Additional certifications in other heavy equipment operation (e.g., excavators, backhoes).
  • Certification from a recognized heavy equipment training institution.
  • Prior experience working within a resort, hospitality, or similar large-scale property management environment.
  • Knowledge of local Jamaican environmental and safety regulations pertaining to waste management and construction.
