Job Description
Lakeridge Health is excited to announce an opportunity for a dedicated and compassionate Healthcare Support Worker to join our team through our Overseas Pathway program. This unique initiative is designed to support internationally trained healthcare professionals in leveraging their existing expertise and adapting to the Canadian healthcare environment. As a Healthcare Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the patient experience by providing essential daily care and support, contributing directly to a safe and healing environment for our patients across various departments.
This pathway is ideal for individuals who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from their home countries and are eager to apply their skills in a new context. You will work under the guidance of registered nurses and other healthcare professionals, assisting with personal care, mobility, feeding, and maintaining a clean and organized patient environment. Beyond direct patient care, you will be a vital link in communication between patients, their families, and the healthcare team, ensuring that patient needs and concerns are addressed promptly and respectfully.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, including assisting with personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
- Assist patients with mobility, transfers, and positioning, utilizing proper body mechanics and assistive devices.
- Support patients with feeding and hydration, ensuring dietary needs and restrictions are met.
- Monitor and report changes in patient condition, behavior, or vital signs to the nursing staff.
- Maintain a clean, tidy, and safe patient environment, including tidying rooms and changing linens.
- Document care provided and observations accurately and promptly in patient records.
- Collaborate effectively with nurses, physicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ensure patient comfort and dignity at all times, respecting cultural diversity and personal preferences.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities, including those specific to the Overseas Pathway program.
- Adhere to all Lakeridge Health policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in a healthcare support role (e.g., nursing assistant, caregiver) in your home country.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English (both written and verbal).
- Strong empathy, compassion, and a patient-centred approach to care.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic healthcare environment.
- Basic computer literacy for documentation and communication.
- Physical ability to perform duties such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Cultural sensitivity and adaptability to diverse patient populations and workplace cultures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized healthcare support worker or nursing assistant program from your home country.
- Previous experience within a hospital or long-term care setting.
- Familiarity with Canadian healthcare standards and practices (training provided).
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Additional language proficiency is considered an asset.
