As a Healthcare Assistant – Patient Support, you will work closely with our GPs, Practice Nurses, and administrative staff, performing a variety of clinical and administrative duties essential to the smooth running of our practice. Your day will be diverse, ranging from assisting with patient examinations and procedures to carrying out vital observations, supporting chronic disease management clinics, and ensuring the clinical environment is safe and well-maintained. We are looking for someone who can connect with patients, offer reassurance, and provide practical support with a warm and friendly approach. You will play a vital role in educating patients on health promotion and self-care, under the guidance of our nursing team. Key Responsibilities
- Assist GPs and Practice Nurses with patient examinations, minor procedures, and various clinical tasks.
- Perform vital observations including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, and record accurately.
- Conduct phlebotomy (taking blood samples) and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Perform ECGs (electrocardiograms) and basic spirometry.
- Support patients in chronic disease management clinics (e.g., diabetes, asthma), under supervision.
- Provide basic wound care, dressing changes, and suture removal as directed by clinical staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and stock levels of clinical rooms and equipment, ensuring adherence to infection control policies.
- Assist with patient triage, ensuring patients are directed to the most appropriate healthcare professional.
- Provide health promotion advice and support to patients, encouraging healthy lifestyles.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all patient interactions and clinical data in electronic patient records.
- Participate in practice meetings, training sessions, and continuous professional development activities.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and adhere to data protection regulations.
Required Skills
- SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Healthcare, or equivalent qualification/experience.
- Proven experience as a Healthcare Assistant, preferably in a primary care setting.
- Proficiency in basic clinical observations and recording.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate approach.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Basic IT literacy for electronic patient record systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with phlebotomy and ECGs.
- Knowledge of chronic disease management support.
- Experience with EMIS Web or similar GP practice software.
- First Aid certificate.
