Job Description
We are actively seeking a compassionate, experienced, and highly motivated Guidance Counselor to join our esteemed team at Hilltop International School Calabar. This crucial role is central to our commitment to providing comprehensive student welfare and academic support services. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing a robust guidance program that addresses the academic, personal, social, and emotional needs of our students across various age groups. You will provide individual and group counseling, facilitating students’ ability to navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and develop essential life skills necessary for success in a rapidly changing world. Key aspects of this role include academic advising, career exploration, and college planning, where you will guide students through the complex process of selecting courses, identifying higher education opportunities, and preparing for future careers. You will collaborate closely with teachers, parents, and school administration to identify student needs, develop intervention strategies, and foster a positive and inclusive school climate. Furthermore, the Guidance Counselor will play a vital role in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and promoting mental health awareness through workshops and educational initiatives. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students regarding academic progress, personal growth, social interactions, and emotional well-being.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school guidance programs aligned with the school's mission and educational objectives.
- Assist students in academic planning, course selection, and understanding college entrance requirements and career pathways.
- Organize and facilitate workshops on topics such as study skills, stress management, bullying prevention, and decision-making.
- Collaborate with parents, teachers, and administrators to identify and address student concerns, providing appropriate referrals to external resources when necessary.
- Conduct crisis intervention and provide immediate support to students and families during emergencies or significant life events.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student records in accordance with professional ethical standards and school policies.
- Serve as a liaison between students, parents, and school staff to ensure effective communication and a coordinated approach to student support.
- Participate actively in professional development activities to stay abreast of best practices in guidance and counseling.
- Contribute to the positive school culture by promoting empathy, respect, and inclusivity among the student body.
Required Skills
- Master's Degree in School Counseling, Educational Psychology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience as a Guidance Counselor or School Counselor, preferably within a K-12 educational setting.
- Proven ability to provide effective individual and group counseling to diverse student populations.
- Strong knowledge of child and adolescent development, learning theories, and counseling techniques.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain strict confidentiality.
- Demonstrated proficiency in crisis intervention and conflict resolution strategies.
- Familiarity with college admissions processes, career exploration tools, and scholarship opportunities.
- Proficiency in using relevant educational software and student information systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional counseling license or certification (e.g., LPC, NCC) from a recognized body.
- Experience working within an international school curriculum framework.
- Fluency in additional local languages (e.g., Efik, Ibibio) and cultural understanding of the region.
- Experience in developing and leading social-emotional learning (SEL) programs.
- Demonstrable experience with psychometric assessments and educational diagnostic tools.
