Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, strimming, edging, weeding, and leaf clearing across the campus.
  • Plant, prune, and maintain trees, shrubs, hedges, and floral displays to enhance campus aesthetics.
  • Prepare and maintain sports pitches, communal green spaces, and other landscaped areas to high standards.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and hand tools, ensuring their safe and efficient use.
  • Implement pest and disease control measures where necessary, in an environmentally conscious manner.
  • Ensure pathways, car parks, and public areas are clear, safe, and free from debris, especially during adverse weather conditions like snow or ice.
  • Support campus events by assisting with grounds setup and clearance as required.
  • Adhere strictly to health and safety regulations, including COSHH, and maintain accurate records of work performed.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, damage to property, or safety hazards promptly to supervisors.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of grounds maintenance practices and sustainable initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in grounds maintenance or a related horticultural role (minimum 2 years).
  • Proficiency in operating a range of grounds maintenance machinery and hand tools safely and effectively.
  • A solid understanding of horticultural practices, including plant care, soil management, and pest identification.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and a proactive approach to tasks.
  • Strong physical fitness and the ability to perform demanding outdoor tasks in all weather conditions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of grounds presentation.
  • Valid UK driving license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture or a related discipline.
  • PA1/PA6 certification for safe use of pesticides.
  • Experience operating specialist grounds equipment (e.g., compact tractors, ride-on mowers with attachments).
  • Basic first aid certification.
  • Knowledge of sustainable groundskeeping practices and environmental best practices.
