Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain growing media, pots, and seed trays according to established guidelines.
  • Plant seeds, seedlings, and cuttings accurately and efficiently, ensuring proper spacing and conditions.
  • Implement precise watering and fertigation schedules for various plant types using different irrigation methods (e.g., drip, overhead).
  • Monitor plant health daily, meticulously identifying and reporting any early signs of pests, diseases, or nutritional deficiencies.
  • Apply organic or approved pest control measures as directed by supervisors, ensuring safety and efficacy.
  • Perform regular pruning, thinning, trellising, and other necessary plant training techniques to promote healthy growth and maximize yield.
  • Monitor and adjust environmental controls (temperature, humidity, ventilation, lighting, CO2 levels) within the greenhouse as required to maintain optimal growing conditions.
  • Assist with the harvesting, sorting, cleaning, and preliminary packaging of vegetable crops, adhering to quality standards.
  • Maintain impeccable cleanliness and organization within the greenhouse, including sanitizing tools, growing areas, and walkways.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of plant growth, environmental conditions, treatments applied, and harvest yields.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, structural issues, or maintenance needs of the greenhouse promptly to management.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety guidelines, horticultural protocols, and operational procedures.
  • Assist in the setup and breakdown of growing experiments and trials as needed.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability and experience in caring for plants, including watering, pruning, transplanting, and general maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of plant life cycles, plant nutrition, and common agricultural practices.
  • Excellent observational skills for detecting subtle changes in plant health, pest infestations, or disease symptoms.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform manual tasks, including lifting up to 25kg, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to upholding high standards of quality and precision in all tasks.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for accurate record-keeping and following instructions.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) equivalent.
  • Previous experience (1-2 years) working in a commercial greenhouse, farm, plant nursery, or similar horticultural setting.
  • Knowledge of different irrigation techniques (e.g., hydroponics, drip irrigation) and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
  • Certification or coursework in horticulture, agriculture, botany, or a related field.
