Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Fisheries Officer to join our dedicated team in Lisala, Mongala Province. This crucial role involves overseeing and managing the aquatic resources within the province, ensuring sustainable practices, and contributing to the conservation of our vital aquatic ecosystems. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the implementation of national and provincial fisheries policies and regulations, working directly with local communities, fishing cooperatives, and other stakeholders. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular field surveys and monitoring of fish stocks, aquatic habitats, and fishing activities across Mongala Province.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data on fish catch, effort, species composition, and environmental parameters to assess the health of aquatic ecosystems.
  • Enforce provincial and national fisheries regulations, identify and report illegal fishing practices, and support anti-poaching initiatives.
  • Engage with local fishing communities, traditional leaders, and stakeholders to promote sustainable fishing practices, co-management initiatives, and alternative livelihoods.
  • Develop and deliver training programs and workshops for fishers on sustainable harvesting techniques, gear selectivity, and post-harvest handling.
  • Participate in the development and review of fisheries management plans and policies to ensure long-term sustainability.
  • Monitor water quality and assess potential impacts of pollution or environmental degradation on aquatic resources.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, research papers, and presentations on fisheries status and management recommendations.
  • Collaborate with other government agencies, NGOs, and research institutions on integrated natural resource management projects.
  • Respond to community inquiries and concerns related to fisheries and aquatic management, providing expert advice and solutions.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Fisheries Science, Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in fisheries management, aquatic conservation, or related field operations.
  • Proven experience in field data collection, analysis, and reporting for aquatic resources.
  • Strong understanding of fisheries management principles, aquatic ecology, and conservation issues relevant to the DRC context.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging field conditions.
  • Fluency in French (official language of DRC) and proficiency in Lingala (local language) is highly advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and spatial analysis of aquatic data.
  • Familiarity with community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) approaches.
  • Previous experience working with governmental or non-governmental organizations in the DRC or similar developing countries.
  • Knowledge of local artisanal fishing methods and aquaculture techniques.
