Job Description

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a dedicated and meticulous Field Enumerator to join our dynamic team in Goma, North Kivu Province. As a Field Enumerator, you will play a crucial role in the collection of high-quality data that directly informs our humanitarian programs and interventions. Working under the direct supervision of the Project Manager or Research Coordinator, you will be responsible for conducting various data collection activities, including household surveys, focus group discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews (KIIs), and observational data gathering. Your primary responsibility will be to accurately collect data from beneficiaries and community members in designated areas across Goma and surrounding localities, often in challenging and remote environments. You will utilize digital data collection tools, primarily smartphones or tablets, to ensure efficiency and accuracy. This role requires a strong commitment to ethical principles of data collection, including confidentiality, informed consent, and respondent safety.

The data collected by Field Enumerators is vital for program monitoring, evaluation, and learning, enabling the IRC to assess the effectiveness of our interventions, identify gaps, and adapt our strategies to better serve those in need. You will be an ambassador for the IRC in the communities you serve, maintaining professional conduct, cultural sensitivity, and respect at all times. This position demands excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a high level of attention to detail to ensure the integrity and reliability of the data. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct household surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews with community members and beneficiaries using digital data collection tools (e.g., smartphones, tablets).
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of collected data by adhering strictly to survey protocols and guidelines.
  • Obtain informed consent from all respondents before conducting any interviews or data collection activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and anonymity of all collected information and respondents.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with community members, local authorities, and project staff.
  • Report daily progress, challenges, and any significant observations to the immediate supervisor.
  • Participate actively in all training sessions and debriefing meetings.
  • Adhere to IRC's safety and security protocols and ethical standards at all times.
  • Assist in the identification and selection of respondents based on project criteria.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Swahili and French (written and spoken)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to engage diverse communities sensitively
  • Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and integrity
  • Basic computer literacy, including experience with smartphone or tablet applications
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging field conditions
  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for local customs and traditions
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical standards in data collection

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (at least 1 year) as a Field Enumerator or in similar data collection roles, preferably with an NGO or research institution
  • Familiarity with digital data collection platforms such as ODK Collect, KoboToolbox, or SurveyCTO
  • Knowledge of the local context and geography of Goma and surrounding areas in North Kivu Province
  • Diploma or Certificate in Social Sciences, Statistics, Demography, or a related field
  • Ability to travel extensively within Goma and its environs, sometimes to remote locations
