Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Fiber Optic Installer to join our dynamic team in Calabar. This crucial role involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic cables and associated equipment, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, uninterrupted internet services to our valued residential and business customers. As a Fiber Optic Installer, you will be responsible for a comprehensive range of tasks from initial site surveys and cable laying to advanced fusion splicing, termination, testing, and troubleshooting. You will work extensively in the field, often outdoors and in varying conditions, operating specialized equipment to dig trenches, pull cables, and connect fiber optic networks. Key Responsibilities
- Install, connect, and configure fiber optic cables and related equipment for new and existing customers.
- Perform precision fusion splicing, mechanical termination, and testing of fiber optic cables to industry standards.
- Conduct thorough site surveys to evaluate installation requirements, identify potential obstacles, and determine optimal cable routes.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair fiber optic network issues, including signal loss, breaks, and equipment malfunctions.
- Operate trenching machines, cable pullers, and other specialized equipment safely and efficiently for cable laying operations.
- Ensure strict adherence to all company safety regulations, quality standards, and industry best practices during all operations.
- Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, material usage, and customer interactions.
- Educate customers on the proper use and care of installed fiber optic equipment and services.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments to ensure project completion and customer satisfaction.
- Provide technical support and guidance as needed, contributing to a positive team environment.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of proven experience in fiber optic cable installation, splicing, and termination.
- Proficiency in using fiber optic tools and test equipment, including fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters, and light sources.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic network architecture, cable types, and transmission principles.
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, and network schematics.
- Excellent physical stamina and agility for outdoor work, climbing, lifting heavy equipment, and working in confined spaces.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving network issues.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with customers and team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal certification in Fiber Optic Technology (e.g., FOA CFOT, BICSI FTTP).
- Experience with various cable laying and trenching methods.
- Basic knowledge of local telecommunications regulations and infrastructure standards.
- Familiarity with IP networking concepts and basic computer skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant technical diploma or degree is a plus.
