Job Description
Are you passionate about working the land and contributing directly to community food security? Caritas Gemena ASBL is seeking dedicated and hardworking individuals to join our team as Farm Workers, specializing in Planting & Harvest operations. This is a critical role that supports our agricultural development projects aimed at improving food production and local livelihoods in Gemena and its environs. As a Farm Worker, you will be involved in the full cycle of crop production, from preparing the soil and sowing seeds to nurturing growth and harvesting produce. This role is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, offering a chance to directly contribute to the well-being of families and communities. We are looking for individuals who are reliable, possess a strong work ethic, and are eager to learn and apply sustainable farming techniques under the guidance of our agricultural supervisors. This position requires a commitment to working outdoors in various weather conditions and a readiness to engage in collaborative team efforts, ensuring the successful implementation of our agricultural initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare land for planting, including clearing fields, tilling soil, and creating beds according to project specifications.
- Plant seeds, seedlings, and saplings by hand or using basic tools, following established spacing and depth guidelines.
- Water, weed, and fertilize crops as instructed by agricultural supervisors to ensure healthy growth and optimal yield.
- Monitor crops daily for signs of pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies and promptly report findings to supervisors for action.
- Participate actively in the harvesting of various seasonal crops, utilizing appropriate manual tools or techniques while adhering to quality standards.
- Sort, clean, and pack harvested produce efficiently for immediate storage, distribution, or processing.
- Maintain farm equipment and tools in good working condition, ensuring cleanliness and reporting any repair needs or malfunctions.
- Assist with irrigation system setup, operation, and maintenance, ensuring crops receive adequate water.
- Perform general farm maintenance tasks, such as fence repair, tidying storage areas, waste management, and infrastructure upkeep.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, health regulations, and agricultural best practices to ensure a safe working environment.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, local community members, and supervisors to achieve production targets and project goals.
Required Skills
- Exceptional physical stamina and ability to perform strenuous tasks for extended periods in outdoor environments.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions (sun, rain, heat) throughout the year.
- Ability to follow verbal instructions accurately and efficiently from supervisors and team leaders.
- Basic understanding and practical knowledge of agricultural tools and equipment.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, punctuality, and a proactive attitude.
- Effective teamwork and communication skills to work collaboratively within a diverse team.

- Experience with manual irrigation techniques and water conservation practices.
- Knowledge of basic crop rotation and soil health principles.
