Job Description
As an Environmental Officer specializing in Waste Control & Compliance at Rona Integrated Services Limited, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring our operations and those of our clients in Aluu, Port Harcourt, and surrounding areas adhere to the highest environmental standards and regulatory requirements. This is a critical on-site position designed for a proactive and detail-oriented professional who is passionate about environmental stewardship and possesses a strong understanding of waste management principles, environmental legislation, and compliance frameworks in Nigeria.
You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring waste management strategies, conducting regular environmental audits, and ensuring all activities comply with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including but not limited to NESREA guidelines, DPR regulations (where applicable), and international best practices (e.g., ISO 14001). Your day-to-day will involve hands-on oversight of waste segregation, collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal processes, with a keen focus on minimizing environmental impact and promoting resource recovery.
This role demands excellent analytical skills to assess environmental risks, strong communication abilities to liaise with regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders, and the capacity to develop and deliver effective environmental training programs. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive waste management plans, including hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.
- Ensure full compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., NESREA, DPR) and company policies.
- Conduct regular environmental inspections and audits of operational sites to identify non-compliance and areas for improvement.
- Prepare and submit accurate environmental reports to regulatory agencies and internal management within specified deadlines.
- Investigate environmental incidents, near misses, and non-conformances, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop and deliver environmental awareness and waste management training programs for staff and contractors.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation, best practices, and emerging trends in waste management.
- Liaise effectively with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and environmental consultants.
- Participate in the development and continuous improvement of the company's Environmental Management System (EMS), aligned with ISO 14001 standards.
- Monitor environmental performance indicators and contribute to setting environmental objectives and targets.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian environmental laws and regulations (e.g., NESREA Act, DPR regulations).
- Proven experience in waste management strategies, including segregation, collection, treatment, and disposal.
- Ability to conduct environmental impact assessments and risk analyses.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in environmental auditing and reporting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex environmental information clearly.
- Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g., NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate, ISO 14001 Lead Auditor).
