Job Description

MCK is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Officer – Compliance to join our dynamic team in Likasi, Haut-Katanga Province. In a region where responsible resource management is paramount, this role is critical to upholding MCK’s commitment to environmental sustainability and regulatory adherence. As an Environmental Officer – Compliance, you will be at the forefront of ensuring that all our operational activities, from mining to logistics, fully comply with national environmental laws, international standards, and MCK’s internal environmental management policies. You will be responsible for meticulously monitoring environmental performance, conducting regular audits, and implementing corrective actions to mitigate any potential impacts on local ecosystems and communities. Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure full compliance with national environmental laws (e.g., Congolese Mining Code, Environmental Protection Law) and international best practices (e.g., IFC Performance Standards).
  • Conduct regular environmental inspections, audits, and site visits across MCK's operational areas in Likasi and surrounding regions.
  • Monitor key environmental parameters including air quality, water quality, noise levels, waste management, and biodiversity.
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive environmental reports to regulatory bodies and internal management, detailing compliance status, incidents, and mitigation efforts.
  • Investigate environmental incidents, non-conformances, and complaints, identifying root causes and recommending corrective and preventative actions.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with ISO 14001 standards.
  • Provide environmental training and awareness programs to employees and contractors to foster a strong environmental culture.
  • Collaborate with operational teams, local communities, and regulatory authorities on environmental matters.
  • Manage environmental permits and licenses, ensuring timely renewal and adherence to conditions.
  • Advise management on emerging environmental regulations and industry best practices.

Required Skills

  • Proven knowledge of environmental legislation and regulations in DR Congo.
  • Strong understanding of environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • Proficiency in environmental monitoring techniques and data analysis.
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough environmental audits and risk assessments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications in environmental management or auditing (e.g., NEBOSH, IEMA).
  • Experience in the mining or heavy industrial sector in DR Congo.
  • Proficiency in French and/or Swahili.
  • Knowledge of GIS and environmental modeling software.
  • Experience with community engagement in an industrial context.
