Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and dependable Driver for our operations in Goma, North Kivu Province. This critical role involves providing safe, timely, and efficient transportation services for designated staff members, often including senior management or visiting officials, within Goma and occasionally to surrounding areas as required. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the comfort and safety of passengers, maintaining the vehicle in impeccable condition, and upholding the highest standards of professionalism and discretion. This position demands a keen understanding of local road networks, traffic regulations, and security protocols in a dynamic environment.

Key aspects of this role include meticulous adherence to scheduled movements, readiness for ad-hoc assignments, and the ability to adapt to changing travel plans. You will be expected to conduct daily vehicle inspections, perform basic maintenance checks, and ensure all necessary documentation, safety equipment, and supplies are present and up-to-date in the vehicle. Beyond driving, this role requires a proactive approach to anticipating logistical needs, assisting with loading and unloading, and representing MSF with a respectful and professional demeanor at all times. Discretion, reliability, and a strong commitment to safety are paramount. The Driver will also be responsible for maintaining accurate vehicle logs, reporting any incidents or mechanical issues promptly, and ensuring compliance with all MSF security guidelines and local traffic laws. This is more than just a driving job; it’s a vital support role that enables our teams to deliver life-saving humanitarian aid effectively and safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, reliable, and punctual driving services for designated MSF staff and authorized personnel.
  • Operate vehicles in accordance with all local traffic laws, MSF safety standards, and security protocols.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles, reporting any mechanical issues or damage immediately.
  • Ensure the vehicle is always clean, well-maintained, and equipped with necessary safety tools (e.g., first aid kit, spare tire, fire extinguisher).
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle logbooks, recording mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities.
  • Assist passengers with luggage and other items as needed, ensuring their safe loading and unloading.
  • Plan efficient routes, considering road conditions, security advisories, and time constraints.
  • Adhere strictly to confidentiality and discretion regarding passengers and their activities.
  • Monitor vehicle registration, insurance, and service schedules to ensure compliance.
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or security concerns to the immediate supervisor without delay.
  • Be available for flexible working hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, based on operational needs.
  • Communicate effectively with passengers and the logistics team regarding travel plans and potential delays.
  • Perform minor vehicle repairs and maintenance as necessary and when capable.
  • Ensure all passengers wear seatbelts and adhere to safety regulations.

Required Skills

  • Valid professional driving license (Category B/C)
  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable professional driving experience, preferably with an NGO or international organization
  • Excellent knowledge of Goma and surrounding areas, including road networks and local conditions
  • Proven track record of safe driving and adherence to traffic laws
  • Basic vehicle mechanics and maintenance knowledge
  • Ability to communicate effectively in French and Swahili (oral)
  • Strong sense of responsibility, punctuality, and reliability
  • High degree of discretion and integrity
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and react appropriately in emergency situations

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Certificates in defensive driving or first aid
  • Experience driving 4×4 vehicles in challenging terrain
  • Previous experience working for a humanitarian organization in North Kivu
  • Familiarity with GPS navigation systems and communication devices
